Everything you need to know about anti-sweat injections

Excessive sweating isn't just inconvenient, it can be pretty embarrassing - sweaty palms when you're nervous, rocking pit stains on the regular or feeling your shoes fill with smelly sweat doesn't exactly make you feel sexy.
Trying to be your best, most confident and vibrant self is tricky when you're too busy worrying if everyone's noticed you're dripping in sweat.
The good news is, there might be an unlikely solution - botox.
We spoke to Dr. Josh Wall, medical director of Contour Clinics to tell us everything we need to know about anti-sweat injections.

How do anti-sweat injections work?
Dr Josh gives us the lowdown on how the injections actually work. "Using botulinum toxin injections, commonly known as botox, communication between nerves and sweat glands are interrupted. This results in less to no sweating in the treated area."
Who is the ideal candidate for anti-sweat injections?
If your excessive-perspiration is leading to a bit of social anxiety, Dr Josh thinks this treatment could be ideal for you.
"Those who are concerned about their underarms, feet, palm sweating. Most of our patients develop a preoccupation in social situations in regards to noticeable sweating. This holds them back from fully participating socially. Anti-sweat injections provide a complete cure for these worries."
Is it painful?
For those interested in this treatment but are a little squeamish when it comes to pain, fear not. Dr Josh says that "numbing cream is applied to the area prior to treatment. Most patients feel 2/10 pain at worst."
How long do the injections last?
If you're happy with the results, Dr Josh says you can expect to get them redone every six months.
Do the injections work immediately?
The results do kick in quickly, but they're not instant. Dr Josh advises us that "Injections take 3-5 days to start working."
How long does the procedure take?
This treatment is a quick one, Dr Josh says that it only takes ten minutes.
How many sessions does it take to see results?
Dr Josh informs that you'll only need one session for it to work.
Is there any downtime?
Good news for busy people, this treatment doesn't require any downtime.
How much does the procedure cost?
A little bit exxy at $1000, but if you've been struggling with excessive sweat for a long time, it may be worth the investment.
I’ve heard that if you get anti-sweat injections in your armpits it doesn’t stop sweating, it just moves it to a different location – is that true?
But don't we need to sweat sometimes? Absolutely.
"The function of sweating is to cool the body. If unable to sweat under the arms, theoretically your core body temperature may be slightly elevated as compared to baseline. This may create a more intense bodily stimulus to sweat, hence why people may complain of increased sweating in other areas" Dr Josh informs us.
Is there anyone who shouldn’t get anti-sweat injections?
Dr Josh says there are a few kinds of people who should steer clear of anti-sweat injections:
- Those with rare neuromuscular disorders.
- Those who've had a previous allergic reaction to botox/dysport/xeomin.
- Anyone with an active infection in the treatment area.
- Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Would you ever try anti-sweat injections?

I want to first say I am thankful to God almighty for making me see this day and secondly to Dr.Sandy who restored my health back. I have been a Herpes virus patient for some time now, I have been running here and there looking for help/cure but none could help. I ran into a testimony by someone who testified how she was cured of a terrible disease by Dr.Sandy So I decided to contact the herbal doctor. I explained to him, and he said he can cure me. We started the process and he prepared herbs and sent them to me in my country and gave me directions on how I am to use it. I followed his directions and now To God be the glory he could cure me with his herbal mixture. I say once again thanks to Dr.Sandy for curing me of my Herpes with his herbs. Are you kidding? You sweat for a purpose, blocking the process interferes with lymphatic drainage. I get excess sweating would be a problem, but I feel like it's about getting to the cause of the problem, instead of blocking a natural bodily process.

Hello, I am Monalisa. After being in relationship with my husband for years, he broke up with me. I did everything within my reach to bring him back but all was in vain, I wanted him back so badly because of the love I had for him, I begged him with everything, I made promises but he refused. I explained my problem to my friend and she suggested that I should rather contact a spell caster that could help me cast a spell to bring him back , I had no choice than to try it. I messaged the spell caster, and he assured me there was no problem and that everything will be okay before three days. He cast the spell and surprisingly on the second day, my husband called me. I was so surprised, I answered the call all he said was that he was so sorry for everything that had happened He wanted me to return to him. He also said he loved me so much. I was so happy and went to him that was how we started living together happily again. The spell casters email is : [dredesspellcaster@gmail.com]. I sweat excessively, but on the face! I use facial antiperspirant in summer.
As for my pits, I noticed that I sweat a lot less now that I've had IPL hair reduction.

I have sweaty palms, but this isn't something I would consider having done.

I had a cousin who got this done, think it was just before last Christmas or the one before.
She expressed she wasn't super thrilled with the results and that she found she just started sweating more on her head and in the middle of her back.
Which makes sense, given you generally sweat as a method to bring the body temperature down, so if you're blocking one way to chill out, you're body will likely find another avenue to cool you off.
I guess it's not for everyone

Oh my goodness, from the head isn't a great alternative, that's worse, the makeup will just sweat off.

I hate underarm and feet sweat.
But rather than go down this route for underarm sweat I have realised there are so many things I can do to make it not as bad which includes; drinking the right amount of water (helps regulate your core temperature), wear natural fibres (synthetics are often non breathable), look for clothing colours where you do not notice discolouration from sweat too much (I have a beautiful emerald green top which discolours badly!, faint colours are often good), choose tops which are not tight under the arms, use antiperspirant deodorant, always keep underarm hairs as short as possible and wear layers where you can (so that when you do get too hot you can remove a layer of clothes).
If you do have a sweat problem you cannot pick one of two of these items in isolation, you need to practise all of them at once to avoid always being sweaty.
Once you are in the habit of choosing the right clothes in store and doing everything else, it is not that hard to keep on going but you will still make a mistake every so often (I have and I love my emerald green top which I mentioned earlier, such a beautiful colour but I do not like the embarrassment which it gave me!)

Oh, i’m a shocking sweat ball in summer, with my face and hair the worst culprits. But I’d rather drip and apologise than block this natural cooling function and further overheat. (I swear I run about 5°C hotter than everyone else and haven’t even used a summer-weight doona since the middle of Melbourne’s winter. Just a sheet and even then it gets kicked off throughout the night.)

I'm petrified of needles! I know someone who did this as had excessive hand sweating and it worked for his hands but then he started getting excessive underarm sweating which he never had before

I knew that Botox was a treatment and I would definitely consider it except for the cost! I’m surprised it’s not covered by Medicare but the second it is it would be rorted by thousands who would suddenly claim that their excessive facial sweating causes them social anxiety to the point that it is detrimental to their mental health.

I sweat when I'm stressed but it's not that bad where I would consider having botox. Since switching to natural deodorant though, I can handle the sweat because it doesn't have an odour.

I would love this. I currently use natural deodorants which are not anti antiperspirants, and I hate that wet, sticky feeling. But at $1,000 I don't think I'll be rushing to have it anytime soon.

I don't have an excessive sweating problem but I can definitely see how some people would want this treatment

I have palmar hyperhydrosis which means excessive sweating of the hands and feet. It is extremely uncomfortable to have this condition in summer. In winter my hands and feet are super dry. I wouldn't go down the path of injections mainly because of the cost.

I have this too S-P but I didn’t know it had a name. I avoid shaking hands with people in Summer. I have to wear different work shoes everyday and try and wear open shoes as much as I can in summer. It’s not as bad under my arms as it used to be thanks to DriClor but I sweat a lot on my upper lip. Not attractive. I saw a dermatologist about it many years ago who ran some bloods which said my condition was not caused by my thyroid glands and he then recommended the DriClor.
What is really embarrassing is when you try and hold your children’s hands and they say Yuck you’ve got sweaty hands. LOUDLY
When my husband and I were dating and I’d hang out at his home he would keep telling me to take my shoes off and relax. If i did that we probably wouldn’t be married today!
