All-Natural Beauty Tips To Help You Transition To A Clean Beauty Routine

There are so many reasons to make the switch to an all-natural beauty routine. Overhauling your beauty products and embracing a toxic-free lifestyle can be a liberating experience. But it can also be completely overwhelming. From decoding labels to knowing which ingredients to avoid, it’s hard to know where to start. So we spoke to Jeannie Bourke, Director of Sydney’s Venustus beauty and body lab, to get her best beauty tips for transitioning to a clean beauty routine.

Here are Jeannie’s top tips for how to start on your journey to an all-natural beauty routine.
1. Have a consultation with a beauty therapist
Preferably someone who has been working with natural skincare for a few years. This way there are less problems and there is backup when there are breakouts and education in how to prevent/lessen problems with your skin.
2. Be clear on why you want to go natural
This is so I can cater to their decisions. Sometimes it’s because they are vegan and do not wish to use any products which have animal ingredients or tested on animals or comes packaged in leather. Others wish to use Australian owned products and some want everything to be organic. Many people move over to organic ingredients when they are having a baby, concerned about the planet and the environment, have an illness or which to make positive changes in their life
3. Start with serums
Start with an organic facial serum and eye serum as these penetrate deeper than anything, you will see & feel the results immediately. Also, a body serum has the ability to penetrate deeper than a body moisturiser and you can use it in the shower after washing & conditioning your hair.
4. Your all-natural body care routine starts before you apply your products
I like to ask how each person is relaxing, meditating, winding down and where do they hold their stress and/or tension in their body. Is there any muscular pain, how do they feel in the morning and in the evening, are they drinking 2 litres of water a day & how much sleep are you getting?
5. Emergency overnight pimple treatment (in case you break out)
Apply black plan mud on all pimples only, not on the entire area. This will draw them out and clear the area.
6. Go slow
Slowly change over as your skincare runs out, with the advice of a professional. I recommend a consult every quarter because your skin will change. As your products run out and you move over, we need to keep a close eye on your skin changing and improving as we want it to.
7. Find an all-natural fragrance
Venustus private label have organic perfumes and we have just launched 12 horoscope perfumes using all organic essential oils in water. These are great mood enhancers, looking at each sign, what they need right now and adding the right ingredient for them.
8. Switch to a natural body oil
For the body, organic aromatherapy ingredients are always the best. Carrier oils like jojoba are great for people living in australia, and others are coconut oil (although I would not recommend this for the face).
9. Know which ingredients are right for your skin concerns
If you’re concerned about aging:
-
Rose has a tonic effect on the capillaries and can be used for the treatment of broken capillaries, redness & inflammation of the skin (rose water has the same).
If you’re concerned about dehydration:
-
Organic apricot oil, which readily absorbs into the skin and contains high levels of Vitamin A, while providing tissue regeneration.
If you’re concerned about dull, tired looking skin:
-
Carrot seed oil can improve the complexion and has been described as one of the strongest revitalising essential oils.
If you’re concerned about breakouts:
-
Tea tree oil (antimicrobial, antiseptic, bactericide, immunostimulant ingredient).
-
Geranium (hormonal balancing ingredient).
-
Lemon (antiseptic, antimicrobial, astringent, bactericidal ingredient).
-
Lavender (analgesic, antiseptic, antidepressant ingredient).

I am well aware of natural products. Even though I don’t always use them, I will ensure my choices are cruelty free and not tested on animals.

I fell in love with the Arbonne brand! They've been offering natural products for over 40 years! Vegan and gluten free as well. My skin has never felt and looked better.
Reach out if you want to know more.

I’m very aware and constantly educating myself about Natural options. I don’t use products that are tested on animals and I am selective as I can be. Sometimes the choices are limited so I’m not perfect and like many I am doing the best I can.

I have been slowly transitioning to natural / cruelty free / organic skincare. My skin is going through its own climate change at the moment after moving to Australia. I really want to support Australian brands where possible so I'm currently working my way through a list to find what works best for my skin. This article is a good find. Thanks!

I try to stay as natural as I can with my beauty products, as well as ethically sourced and Australian made etc. It might cost a bit more, but it will give me better peace of mind when supporting the product.

My beauty routine is mostly natural based. From perfume (excellent aussie brand IME Natural Perfume, Altearah from France), serums, creams, oils, body lotion, wash...some of my fave natural based goods so far come from Vanessa Megan, May linsdorm, Antipodes, Trilogy, Edible Beauty, Ethique...so many more

I switched to skin care without man-made chemicals when brands such as Jurlique launched onto the market - that was a very long time ago! These days, it's easy to make the switch as there are countless natural-based brands around; many of which are Australian.

Coconut Oil is a great starter. It's great for acne, moisturiser and hair mask. I love it :)

Changing over can be a very complicated process so this is a perfect guide.

Good concept, but sometimes lab tested solutions can also be an option. For example Aesop parsley seed serum is half natural half lab tested, great for winter skin but doesn't fit the all natural category.

I prefer natural products, but they ultimately have to work for me to stick with them. I keep trying new products until I find something that works for me.

Great article but I disagree with one advice which is to transition using serum first. I definitely see a lot of advantage starting with cleansers and moisturisers as they tend to be less active than serum, your skin is less likely to notice the sudden change and this eases the transition. I also found that to introduce a "natural" oil or mask on top of the current regime helps with transition. I adore "natural" oil.

I really don't care if the products are natural or not so long as they work!

Agree. This is why I use a mix of different products too.

For me it all comes down to knowledge of natural brands. There would be lots of brands that I haven't even heard of and would probably love. I do have some natural products that really agree with my skin so I am open to liking lots more. :)

I could never switch to a completely natural-based routine. Some natural products cause irritation, create sensitivity and generally most have short shelf lifespans.

The short shelf lives is the real sticky point for me. I am a hoarder.
