How to make sure you smell good in the sweaty summer heat

We’re lucky that here in Australia, our holiday season coincides with a hot summer. But sometimes, on those days that are extra hot, humid and downright sweaty, you can end up smelling less than fresh. Try these tricks to smell good all summer long.

#1 Make your showers count

It’s an obvious one, but you need to be working with a fresh canvas to have any chance of smelling good in summer. Use a scented bath or shower gel smell clean and delicious.

#2 Don't forget your deodorant

Look, this shouldn’t really need to be pointed out, but it’s vital if we want to avoid smelling rank this summer.

#3 Shake up your spritzing

We know to spritz perfume on our wrists and neck, but there’s a few other spots you can try out. The pulse points in the back of your knees are warm, soft and likely to be exposed in summer, so make a good spot to spritz. Your hair is also good at soaking up surrounding smells, so makes a great carrier for fragrance. Plus, you can get perfumes that are specifically made for hair so they won’t damage your tresses!

#4 Keep a few minis handy

Sometimes, even if you leave the house clean and spritzed in something lovely, you can walk straight into muggy mayhem. On those impossible days, it’s a good idea to have an emergency kit on you. If you’ve got wipes to start fresh, a mini deodorant and a touch up fragrance with you, you’ll be back to smelling sweet.

#5 Use a fresh fabric softener

Scent carries in your clothes, so it's important to keep them fresh and clean. If you want to take your fragrance game to the next level, some brands now make laundry detergent in their signature scents! To smell good 24/7, you can also spritz your linens.

#6 You are what you eat and drink

Summer means it’s the silly season, and often with the silly season comes a little bit of over indulgence. "Eating well — lots of fresh food, including fruits and vegetables and clean protein — really keeps the body fresh and running smoothly, thus providing the perfect substrate for fragrance," Anne Sanford, founder of LURK Natural Fragrances, told Refinery29. And the main culprits that'll make you smell? Spices, garlic, onion and alcohol.
#7 Fix those feet up

We’re all guilty of getting a new pair of shoes and never wanting to take them off. But if you’ve been wearing them in a heatwave for five days straight, they could be starting to get a little on the stinky side. To combat foot or shoe odour, try a spray like the Avon Footworks Odour Neutralising Foot Spray or Nutri-Synergy NS-8 Foot & Shoe Deodoriser.
#8 Make sure your mouth is clean

Avoid bad breath by brushing your teeth twice a day with a good toothpaste, flossing and drinking plenty of water. Carrying some mints or chewing gum for a refresher always helps, too.
beautyheaven loves: Oral-B Clinical Toothpaste and Colgate Total ® Toothpaste
#9 Pick some good perfumes

Ah, the most fun part! Summer is all about fruity, floral and fun scents. If you can, try to pick lighter fragrances.

These are good tips. I've just started getting into fragrance and I'm learning so much. Body mists are great in summer to take with you and give yourself a refresh when you need it. As long as you don't leave them in a hot car.

Smelling good in summer - yeah - last november I picked up some gorgeous 'superpits' made by a lady by hand near byron. She makes three scents and I picked the 'posy' scent. It's brilliant and aluminium (na) freeeee!

Yes! Clean diet crucial! And just ordered one amazing deodorant natural based (got bored with my own DIY), can't wait till it arrives. Need it at those times when moon finishes its cycle (like me haha). Other times I need nothing, when eating only raw...that is when not overloading on fat/protein laden stuff (sprouts, nuts, seeds)

I was coming in to say #1. I disagree with #5 some of us have sensitive skin. I can not use fragranced laundry products. Lucky I can still use deodorant.

I agree with all of these but not so sure about the fabric softener. Although they make your clothes smell nice, they aren't that good for your clothes or the environment.

In our household we all shower several times a day in summer. Fresh is best! I actually havn't 'misted' in a while. That may be something new to introduce to my daughters. Good tip BH.

Fabric softener makes me itch so I stay away from that.

I like to go light on perfume in the heat. I switch to clinical deodorant in summer. One hint: don't apply roll-on deodorant if you're hot & sweaty! The bacteria on your skin which causes the odour will contaminate your roller-ball.

Um pretty sure 90% of these are basic hygiene. Unless I've been under a rock. That said a nice light mist is always good. And I also love a good facial mist spray. As long as its the right one.

I agree ray_jay. You would expect most people would be doing these all year round anyway.
