bh Editors Share Their Summer Hair Must-Haves

Winter may have a pretty bad rep for wreaking havoc on our hair and scalp, but summer can be equally as harsh, just in a totally different way. From indoor air con that strips the moisture from every orifice of our being, to the outdoor humidity that adds moisture back tenfold in the worst possible ways, it can be a real struggle to keep your mane tamed during the summer season.
Luckily, the beautyheaven team have a few helpful tricks to help your hair survive these gruelling months. Whether you suffer from unruly tangles, brittle strands or oily roots, we have a solution for you. Here, our editors share their top summer hair must-haves and how they use them...

Seen the Princess Diaries? Remember when the brush handle literally broke off in Mia’s hair? Well, my mane poses a similar tangle-ridden problem post-swim. I keep the Tangle Teezer Compact Styler ($29.95, mecca.com.au) in my beach bag (or by the pool) so I can comb through before my hair dries with Hagrid-from-Harry-Potter style texture. The brush fits right in your hand (and there’s no handle) so it makes it from roots to ends intact every time. The design also looks like a mermaid’s tale, so it’s obviously meant to be used by the water.

Don’t get me wrong – my hair is dry year round, but there’s something about the salt water and sun of summer that takes it to another level of brittleness. In order to try and get some hydration back into my poor, downtrodden strands I need to call in the big guns, which for me is using a hydrating shampoo. I’ve found in the past that using a hydrating shampoo has left my fine hair greasy and lifeless, but when it’s as dry as it is in the warmer months, it soaks it right up.
At the moment, my nourishing shampoo of choice is the Deep Muk Ultra Soft Shampoo, it leaves it suuuuper soft and helps make up for some of my summer sins.

Being my first summer back in Australia I plan on swimming A LOT. Before getting in the water (beach or pool) I’ll wet my hair first and generously douse it in leave-in conditioner (such as Deep Muk – Ultra Soft Leave-In Conditioner) to protect it from taking in too much salt or chlorine. I’ll always rinse with fresh water straight after swimming too. Then, to keep brassy tones at bay, nothing beats Fudge Clean Blonde Shampoo. I use it every second hair wash, covering my hair from root to tip, leaving for a minute or two, and then following with regular shampoo and conditioner. It’s like magic and I often get asked if I’ve had my hair done after using it.

My hair is the epitome of the age old problem - dry at the bottom and oily at the roots! As a bottle blonde, it’s so important for me to use a protective treatment on my ends daily. I’m currently in love with Wella Professionals System Professional Luxeoil Reconstructive Elixir. It acts as both a hydrating serum and a heat protectant, keeping my ends silky smooth while shielding hair from UV rays and heat styling. For my oily roots (that get a lot worse in the summer heat!) I swear by a clarifying shampoo. I use the Maui Moisture Detoxifying + Volcanic Ash Shampoo because unlike many clarifying shampoos, it doesn’t strip my hair of essential oils. It cleans my scalp and oily roots really well, while remaining gentle on my damaged strands.

I think I must be fairly lucky with the condition of my fine 'once blonde' hair. It isn't dry or oily or brittle. But I also don't do much with a hair drier or any other heated device, except very occasionally on special outings. My issue is keeping it blonde so I resort to home colour kits and there are some that are damaging which I avoid. I also use the John Frieda blonde shampoo and conditioner range to help maintain the blonde colour and that works for me.

My hair is getting better and I am so glad as the chemo really stripped the goodness out of it. This summer I will be wearing a hat to look after it.

I don't think my hair type is the same as any of you but they are good tips regardless.
