Skin care staples for top-to-toe beauty

Taking care of your skin should be your number one beauty priority. Whether it’s dryness and flaking or oiliness and blemishes (or anything in between) – if your skin isn’t looking its best, your confidence can really take a hit (and sometimes no amount of make-up trickery can help you feel better). No matter what your daily skin care routine looks like, there are a few essentials that have to be in your repertoire to properly nourish your skin. So, let’s go back to beauty school and take note of bh’s top-to-toe skin care staples.
RELATED: Is this the cleverest way to boost confidence ever?
Face: Good quality cleanser and sunscreen
If there’s two products that every girl needs, regardless of her skin type, it’s a decent cleanser and sunscreen. Emma Hobson, Education Manager at The International Dermal Institute, explains the importance of cleansing the skin. “Cleansing removes the dirt, grime, dead skin, excess skin oils, make-up and sunscreen off the surface of the skin, preventing congestion, breakouts, dull, rough textured skin and even in the long term, premature ageing.” Yep, it’s pretty much a skin care powerhouse.
bh tip: If you wear long-wearing sunscreen and make-up, double cleanse your skin morning and evening to ensure a deeper clean.
As for sunscreen, it’s a no brainer and Emma sums it up perfectly. “Sunscreen is absolutely critical to protect your skin from the ravaging effects of UV rays. It’s the best protective and anti-ageing product on the market.” If that doesn’t convince you to add sunscreen to your daily skin care routine, I don’t know what will!
Underarms: Nourishing deodorant
You probably didn’t even think of deodorant as a skin care staple, am I right? Well, when you think about it, the skin under our arms can go through a lot on the reg – think sweaty gym sessions, shaving (sometimes dry shaving – eek!), laser treatments and exposure to drying ingredients. And I bet when you moisturise, you don’t spread it right up to the skin under your arms, even though it’s in desperate need of nourishment. That’s why it’s super important to use a specially-formulated deodorant. Look for one that works to keep you dry and odour-free but also moisturises the skin under your arms like Dove Original Aerosol and Roll-On, which contain ¼ moisturising cream and provide 48-hour protection from sweat and odour #winning.
Body: Daily moisturiser
Speaking of nourishing, the rest of your body needs daily hydration, which is why a moisturising lotion should absolutely be on your ‘essentials’ list. According to Emma, body lotion is another multitasking product that not only keeps your skin looking and feeling soft and supple, but also helps protect and restore the barrier function of the skin to prevent dehydration, dryness and increased sensitivity. Emma recommends finding body products that also contain vitamins, peptides, enriching omega oils and protective antioxidants to both moisturise and help fight the signs of ageing.
Hands and nails: Rich hand cream
Often neglected, the skin on your hands is one of the first places to show signs of ageing and when you think about how much you use your hands daily, it’s no surprise. “Using a treatment hand cream filled with age preventative ingredients and nourishing protective oils for the nails combined with SPF30+ will make a considerable difference to the wellbeing of your hands,” says Emma. Not only will it help fight the signs of ageing, but it will ensure the skin on your hands stays nourished and soft. So, keep one at your desk or in your handbag to complete your top-to-toe skin care routine.

My hands were so dry the other day. Thank goodness for the L'occitane intensive hand balm. I got from BH and one of the best things ever! Haven't re bought as still have a bit left and it's pricey but the only product I can say has actually 100% worked for dry skin within like a day.

Yes to the good quality cleanser and sunscreen.
My clinical deodorant is in a cream form, and I have never found it to be drying. I love it!
Unfortunately I can't use a lot of hand cream, as I need to protect the fingerboard of my violin, and it makes piano keys slippery (I do a lot of playing and teaching).
I've been using a body oil lately, and my skin is loving it.

I use cleanser, toner and face moisturiser with SPF. Dove deodorant is my favourite. Underarms need to be well cared for too. For my body moisturiser I use Redwin Sorbolene. It's so nourishing and I've been using it for what seems like forever. All these are essential to my beauty routine. I need to invest in a good quality hand cream though. My hands have been dry lately.

The only dove product I have used is their deodorant. Good stuff too. Now I need to find a good sunscreen.

I've recently started trying to get in a routine of taking care of my whole body, not just my face! My skin is definitely loving me for it. Moisturising my hands and legs, and using a nourishing deodorant definitely leaves your skin soft and amazing!

I try to use a daily face moisturiser with sun protection in it, then if I know I am going to be out in the sun for a fair amount of time I will also apply a sunscreen before I go out.
I use a sorbolene moisturiser every night for my hands before I go to bed. I have got into this habit and apply right before bed it has more time to absorb into my skin. However I need to get into this habit for the rest of my body on a daily basis!

So glad you mentioned sunscreen! Sunscreen is way too often overlooked as a daily necessity and people seem to either not know or ignore the fact that it has a HUGE affect on our skin as we age! My favorite is the La Roche-Posay Anthelios Fluid as its SPF 50+ and dries matte so can be worn under makeup or alone and I totally forget it's there.

Great tips. Cleansing your skin properly is the best thing you can do for your skin, as it removes the dirt and impurities from the day. Sunscreen is the best anti-ageing cream you can use for your skin! I believe moisturising and cleansing are the skincare staples everyone needs!

A moisturizer. As the rest I make (deodorant, cleanser/scrubs) using stuff from the kitchen. My body and hands do not need anything as the skin is moist and soft

I tried Dove many moons ago and found l was allergic to the scent. So l have never tried any of there products since. I find the best body moisturizer is Sorbolene. No fragrance - very important to me, cheap - l go through about 2 litres a year and can buy from many different places.
