Is your sports bra making your boobs saggy?

Confession: I’ve been using the same sports bra for about 6 years.
I’ve always been reluctant to invest in activewear (I’m sorry, but lipstick is a lot more fun) and even if it’s a bit tatty and faded, my go-to Berlei bra seems to do the job.
But an expert has just shattered my (and possibly, your) same-sports-bra existence.
Speaking to allure.com, senior vice president of brand marketing for Under Armour Adrienne Lofton says we need to burn our bras (figuratively speaking) a lot sooner than we think.
“We’ve done a ton of proprietary and secondary research to really understand [sports bras], and we learned that the elasticity in a bra falls out of shape sooner that I think we all expected,” says Lofton.
“If you're exercising anywhere from three to five times per week, for 45 minutes to an hour each session, then you should be replacing your oldest sports bra every six months.”
I’m guessing this means many of us need to go sports bra shopping, stat. Sighhh.
But what if you have no idea how long you’ve had yours? After all, it probably wasn’t the most memorable buy...
Thankfully, Lofton has two signs for figuring out if it’s time to let your old faithful go:
- If you’re a little too comfy in your sports bra (it should be a lot firmer than your day-to-day bra).
- If you notice any bounce whatsoever.
For those of you that are tempted to hold onto theirs, get this:
“…our research showed that after each workout, regardless of cup size, your breast tissue stretches, and this sagging is irreversible,” says Lofton.
Add that to the list of reasons why exercise is tough sometimes.
Sadly, it has to be done – so to keep your boobs as perky as possible, make sure your sports bra is super snug (and definitely not from the early 00s).
How old is your sports bra? Do you think you need to buy a new one?

I hate shopping for bras altogether, I have been properly 'fitted' before but i feel like all the ladies that have fitted me are older and It just doesn't feel right, I do try to purchase tighter sports bras, to reduce movement. I hope its a good thing

I need to buy my daughter one and I've just checked this article. I'd really love some specific info on the latest sports bra out today (so I've started a forum thread on it). It will be great to read what advice there is for me.

i am a fan of good sports bra, the bouncy feel and pain is just not worth it. Didn't know it will sag though ... more reason to invest in a few good ones now

I've just bought a new one and have had to go up a cup size recently. I bought a Hestia one from Big W, very comfy and supportive and a great price.

I thought bras make boobs sag with time. I do not wear them, nearing 4th decade, mine are very perky. I guess it is all in the muscles (yoga in my case)

I wear mine until it is loose on the last hooks.... I think every 6 months is a bit excessive....

Yes I regularly change them as I need good support and unfortunately even the pretty lacy ones need changes every so often as the straps and wires seem to have a shelf life though you can do things to preserve them as much as much by washing in a delicates bags on gentle cycle and folding them a certain way when put away to prevent the cups from dimpling.

I am really careful. I usually double-bra.

I could not stand to double bra as it would make me feel too hot.

Oops, I do have some sports bras that are older than 6 months but I do swap them a lot and just bought myself a new one and I believe my husband got me some staples in Aldi when they had sports gear on special. I should be covered for some time now.

I feel like the reason why I haven't replaced this is because I haven't been exercising :S

It's surprising how quickly bras start losing their elasticity, but they're so expensive ahh!

Its amazing how short a life span bras and knickers have, pay through the nose for them only to find the support is lost through washing them regularly.
